Kanthaloor Valiyasala Mahadeva Temple
The Valiyasala Kanthalloor Mahadeva Temple is an ancient temple of historical importance located in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram city, about one kilometer east of the Padmanabhaswamy Temple, near the Valiyasala Agraharam, on the western bank of the Killiyar River. This temple, which houses Mahadeva in two concepts, Ugramurti and Shantamurti, and Mahavishnu with equal importance, also has deities of Ganapathy, Subrahmanya, Ayyappan, Sri Krishna, Durga, Naga gods, Brahmarakshas and Bhoothathan as sub-deities. This is the largest temple in Thiruvananthapuram city after the Padmanabhaswamy Temple. Kanthalloorshala, a famous Vedic school in ancient Kerala, was located in the vicinity of this temple. It is one of the rare temples with three flagpoles. This temple, which is full of many mythological and historical features, is now under the Travancore Devaswom Board. The main annual festivals of the temple are the 10-day festival celebrated on the Thiruvathira day in the month of Kumbha, Shivaratri in the same month, Thiruvathira in the month of Dhanu, and Ashtamirohini in the month of Chinga.
The place where the temple stands today was the site of many wars. The Chera-Chola-Pandya empires participated in it. It is believed that Valiyasala was the place where the wives of the soldiers killed in such wars performed sati. The story goes that all these took place in the crematorium on the banks of the Killiyar river. Later, the place was filled in and a temple dedicated to Shiva was built in its place. That is the Valiyasala Kanthalloor Mahadev Temple. The story goes that since the crematorium was built on the site where the crematorium stood, the Lord began to be worshipped as the crematorium Shiva. To appease the anger of the crematorium Shiva, who had become an extremely powerful deity, later on, Sambasiva (Paramashiva who is the consort of Parvati) and Mahavishnu were installed on both sides. Among them, Shiva, who is the consort of the family, is also worshipped as Brahma. As a result, this temple became a meeting place of the Trimurti.
Historical records indicate that the Kanthalloor Valiyasala Mahadeva Temple is more than a thousand years old. It is not wrong to assume that the temple is older than the Kanthalloor Sala. From the records obtained from the Padmanabhaswamy Temple, the Kanthalloor Sala was standing here in full glory in the 7th century AD. The Kanthalloor Sala had the same importance as the famous universities of North India like Nalanda and Takshashila. Students from different parts of the country used to come here to study. At that time, this temple gained a lot of importance. It is noteworthy that even the Charvaka Siddhanta, which is based on atheism, was taught here. Information about the temple and the Sala can be found in the stone inscriptions written by the Chola emperors in 985 AD. All these shed light on the antiquity of the temple.
After the demise of Kanthalloorsala, the temple came under the control of the famous Ettuveetil Pillai. The temple continued to stand proudly during their time. However, later on, the last generation of these people used the temple as part of their maneuvers against Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma, the young king of Travancore. The fact that the wife of Kudamon Pillai, the chief of the Ettuveetil Pillai, was located here made it convenient for them. There is a story that Kudamon Pillai, with the help of the temple’s Thantris, invoked the cremation Shiva in the main idol to defeat Marthanda Varma. However, this story is not very credible.
The glory of the Kanthalloor temple ended with this incident. Neither the Travancore kings, from Marthandavarma to Chithira Thirunal Balaramavarma, nor their relatives had ever visited this temple. During Navratri, when the procession to the Padmanabhaswamy temple reached the Valiyasala area, it was a common sight for Chithira Thirunal and his entourage to turn their faces away upon seeing this temple. However, after the death of Chithira Thirunal, when his younger brother Uthradam Thirunal Marthandavarma took charge, he decided to end the problems with the temple and thereafter, members of the royal family came here regularly to have darshan. Apart from this, some history buffs also come here to have darshan. Devotees see this as a sign of a return to the glory of the past.
